Police have confirmed the identity of a man who died following a head-on crash in Whippingham on Tuesday night as that of 46-year-old Jonathan Legge, of Kings Road, East Cowes.
Mr Legge was travelling towards Racecourse Roundabout from East Cowes in his red Vauxhall Corsa when the collision occurred. Sadly, he was declared dead at the scene.
Emergency services battled to free a 44-year-old male from the second vehicle involved, a Land Rover. He was conveyed by land ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries and is now said to be in a stable condition. He remains in hospital.
The road remained closed for around 9 hours as collision investigators from the mainland pieced together the events leading up to the fatal smash.
Flowers have been laid at the scene.
Paying tribute, his estranged wife Pam has said:
“Jon, who was known as Leggy to most of his friends in Australia, held his family and friends very close to his heart.
“He always carried a cheeky grin and when he appeared you always knew there was a funny story to be told or practical joke to be had.
Article continues below this advertisement “To me he was a loving partner and husband and we spent ten years together living in Australia and the Isle of Wight. When it was just me and him it seemed we were in our perfect world.
“He was a loving step-father to my three children who are devastated by his loss. We are all feeling a huge loss and sadness.
“Jon, the stories you told and the hilarious memories we shared will be with us forever. We all love you and you will be forever with us.”
