POLICE CAR DAMAGED FOLLOWING VEHICLE PURSUIT IN NEWPORT

UPDATED: Police on the Isle of Wight have been involved in the pursuit of a car in Newport tonight (Friday).

Officers in an unmarked BMW X5 have been sighted trying to stop a vehicle on Pan Estate.

Locals have reported seeing sparks coming from the suspect vehicle’s car as it raced through the narrow streets.

It is thought the incident, which began around 19:10, has come to a stop on Ash Road off Furrlongs.

UPDATE @ 21:00 – 1 person has been detained following a sudden end to the pursuit on Ash Road. It’s here that an Audi A3 has crashed and come to a stop side-on in the middle of the road.

Island Echo understands the Audi was sold locally within the past few days.

Unfortunately, significant damage has been sustained to a Police vehicle following contact with the suspect car. Damage has been caused to the front bumper, 2 doors, a headlight and the steering.

Both cars are now being recovered from the scene.

No one is thought to have been injured.

UPDATE @ 21:22 – The cars have now been recovered from Ash Road.

Island Roads are attending the scene to clear debris and fluid from the carriageway.

UPDATE SATURDAY – A 27-year-old man from Cowes remains in police custody this lunchtime, Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed.
