A plane has dramatically clipped a house, crashed and burst into flames at Whitecliff Bay Holiday Park in Bembridge this afternoon (Saturday).
Emergency services from across the Isle of Wight are responding to the significant incident involving a light aircraft, just outside the perimeter of Bembridge Airport.
The plane has come down in a densely populated part Whitecliff Bay Holiday Park – on the north side of Hillway Road.
Island Echo is told that the plane had taken off from the airport, developed an issue and attempted to circle round for a safe landing.
However, the plane lost altitude quickly and clipped the chimney stack of a cottage, before coming down in amongst static caravans.
The incident happened at around 14:30, with fire crews, police and ambulance all on scene.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has touched down in a field nearby.
Hillway Road has been closed to all traffic.
UPDATE @ 16:48 – A pilot and their passenger have escaped with their lives – and no one on the ground has been injured – after the plane burst into flames on impact.
