UPDATED: DRIVER TRAPPED IN HEAD-ON CRASH AT WHIPPINGHAM

Published at:

Firefighters are working to free the driver and any occupants of a vehicle which has been involved in a serious road traffic collision on the main road into East Cowes tonight (Thursday).

Emergency services are currently on scene at Whippingham Road, where a vehicle has become ‘wrapped around a tree’, trapping anyone inside. The first 999 calls were made at around 20:00.

The incident has occurred near a fast bend between Racecourse Roundabout and the Folly Lane junction – the same location where 2 other serious road traffic collisions have occurred in recent years.

The road has been closed in both directions.

UPDATE @ 20:40 – Fire Appliances from Newport and East Cowes are on scene and are working with paramedics to extricate the driver of the sports car, which has collided head-on with a tree.

Traffic is being diverted via the backroads between Wootton and Whippingham, resulting in delays.

UPDATE @ 21:13 – 1 male has been extricated from the vehicle – an Audi TT – and is being conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance. He has sustained leg injuries as a result of the crash, but those injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The car is understood to have been travelling towards East Cowes on a straight section of road.

Recovery has been arranged and the road is expected to re-open shortly, although concerns have been raised about the stability of the tree involved in the collision.

Yet another ‘car’ which IF driven normally would stay on the road as all others manage to do. Understandable IF these drivers had a life or death reason to drive fast, but the reality is, to most of these young drivers, there is NO reason to hurry anywhere, and ten minutes difference to ‘pick up’ the kids, the other half, a mate, or to collect or deliver ‘some gear’, would make zero difference to them at all.

Lucky it is only one car involved, so often it is someone truly innocent who has their life ruined by some selfish, impatient low life.

Apologies IF, the driver had a blow out, a medical condition, swerved to ‘avoid’ a kitten, or some other ‘insurance claim’ type excuse, but likely my former assumptions ARE correct.
