Police, fire and ambulance crews are attending a crash involving 2 vehicles on Forest Road on the outskirts of Newport this afternoon (Monday).
The crash has occurred at the Vittlefields crossroads where Whitehouse Road and Betty Haunt Lane meet Forest Road.
2 fire appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are on scene as it is feared at least 1 person is trapped inside a vehicle.
Several ambulances from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are also in attendance.
The emergency services were alerted to the crash at just before 14:30.
Police have closed the road in both directions.
The incident has occurred in the same location as last month’s fatal bus crash which claimed the life of 1 person.
UPDATE @ 15:45 – 2 people have been cut free from a Vauxhall Meriva by firefighters.
Thankfully, no one is thought to have sustained any life-threatening injuries in the smash, which also involved a MG Z5.
Stag Lane Motors are recovering the vehicles from the scene. As a result, Police have now re-opened Forest Road.
UPDATE @ 16:24 – A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has told Island Echo:

“Fire & Rescue and Ambulance attended but there were no serious injuries reported.
“A female passenger was taken to hospital as a precaution after experiencing some chest pain”.

Traffic lights, NOW!
Only a roundabout needed to slow traffic
Oh dear , I think we need a fly over here, like the bridge further up Betty haunt weeee
Look at the cars that crash, old biddies and without stating the obvious, women drivers, sorry but true
I expect the council will again say they will wait for a police report before they do anything. And so it goes on and on.
I was there when it happened I was parked like right in front of the two cars and I heard a massive bang and I looked behind and saw the two cars had crashed into each other
were they distracted by you being parked there ?
The junction doesn’t need lights, but it DOES need the hedgerows cutting back. They severely restrict vision from all directions when pulling out of either turning onto Forest Rd.
No traffic lights required just drivers who look before pulling out
You can’t look before pulling out if coming from Whitehouse Road, because you can’t see what is coming towards Newport. Cars and buses travelling at 50+ mph are on top of you before you can see them.
I tried it last week and discovered that the junction is not clearly marked on the road, to someone who doesn’t know the area, it looks just like the other side roads and not a Major road, until it’s too late to stop.
Be alert and observant and that junction is no problem.
Speed limit needs to be lowered
It’s NOT the speed limits that are the problem it’s the drivers. Theses drivers that keep having accidents will still have accidents at a lower speed as they are obviously not in control of their vehicles. Sorry to say ( my opinion) but some people will never be what I call a “driver”. Follow some on road and they are not positioned right to make right hand turns , can’t judge the width of their vehicles and can’t park to save their lives.
Why traffic lights ??? Been using this road for 25+ years no problem. It’s the DRIVERS need to learn how to drive !!!! Standard of driving is horrendous nowaday. Cars are safer than ever now but they only do what the idiot behind the wheel makes it do
How many more crashes or fatalities have to happen before this stupid council does something about it
Why are you blaming the council when it’s the drivers that are at fault ? I admit head rows should be cut back for safety reasons. But to blame someone else for somebody else’s mistakes is a bit harsh. If you drove a car at 90 mph on a motorway is it the driver at fault? or would you blame the car manufacturers?
More bad driving on the I o w
I frequently use this junction.Visibility is good.Never a problem. Many drivers need to learn to drive.Simple, you have 3 pedals, and a round thing in your hands. One pedal makes you stop one makes you go, the other you select a gear suitable for your speed.Round thing turns the car which way you need to go
You have eyes to check visibility and a brain to decide what’s safe.So what the he’ll is the problem.Idiots that don’t concentrate,on their phone, alcohol,Half shouldn’t be driving.Probably the same ones that charge into you with a trolley in the supermarket.Attitude of many drivers is unbelievable.Lights won’t do no good as you always get those that drive through a red one.Definetly not speed. This is a junction,so you would be going very slowly. As with any junction come to a complete stop and triple check both ways.
I would like to thank all the well wishes for the comments to this accident. My mother and father were in the car that had to have the roof cut off. The cars may look like they should be driven by old biddies and women but I can assure you that my father was driving the car and not my mother. My father does not speed and is well aware of how the pedals work in a car. He is an experienced HGV driver and an experienced coach driver. He has not had an accident in any vehicle since passing his driving test. My mother and father are now enjoying the remainder of their holiday.
For all those people who like to assume that all drivers are Idiots or incapable of controlling or driving their car then let me educate you with some known TRUE FACTS. As my sister has already stated it was our parents in the car which they had to cut the roof off. My Dad is a very professional driver of large vehicles ie lorry / coaches and such like also big & small cars and has held a UK driving licence for over 50+years and has never so much a bump let alone a crash. He’s driving record is exemplary and he has driven on many of the roads on the IOW over.many years when visiting in either Coaches lorries or cars without incident. However on Monday out parents car was struck at high speed by the other motor(50+) weve been told. So please think about what you write before you know the truth as you never who you will upset or offend. But for those that were truly concerned for our Mum & Dad they are as well as can be expected given the circumstances. So thank you for your concern..
