1 person is trapped in their vehicle close to a cliff edge as a result of a road traffic collision on the main Whitwell to Ventnor road this morning (Friday).
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have mobilised multiple crews to the scene on Whitwell Road following a call from Police at around 08:40.
Island Echo is told that the vehicle is halfway over the cliff, with firefighters working to stabilise the car and free its occupant.
3 fire appliances and an officer are on scene alongside Police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
The incident has occurred to the west of Ventnor Rugby Club.
Whitwell Road has been closed in both directions.
UPDATE @ 09:45 – Emergency services have now stood down from the incident, which is not as serious as first feared by the blue light services.
A silver Saab has left the carriageway, mounted a small bank and come to rest facing the opposite way in amongst undergrowth.
The driver has been helped from the vehicle and left in the care of paramedics.
Whitwell Road has now re-opened to all traffic in both directions.

The mystery affliction strike again. The hands jerk, the foot drops onto the accelerator and the car leave the road.
I wish our NHS could find a cure for this Island wide illness.
And perhaps the phone drops from the hand
More bad driving on the I o w
Wish it was you in the car. You don’t the facts so shut up
So not really a collision then. Just another single vehicle ‘accident’
hardly trapped – passenger side is in perfect condition and the door will happily open.
I suppose the driver just sat there, like some poor unfortunate, wailing, whilst waiting for the whole world to come to their rescue.
why call the police etc…. just shove the car in reverse and drive out of the hedge and back onto the road – or call mates for a tow or roadside recovery.
Let us just be thankful that the driver apparently suffered no serious injuries.
Hardly half way over a cliff!! Jesus! Get it right before you write anything!! Only front wheel in hedge!! Talk bout waste of time!!!
What a waste of money just open the door you idiots
Would be interesting to have an analysis of these single vehicle accidents in case there is a common cause?
FFS This is nowhere near the edge of the cliff LOL
