A motorcyclist is being tended to by paramedics following a collision with another vehicle on the outskirts of Newport tonight (Friday).
The incident has occurred on Whiterails Road – which connects the towns of Newport and Wootton – between the junctions for Island Riding Centre and Solent Grange.
A Yamaha YZF R3 and another vehicle – thought to be a van – appear to have been involved.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has a critical care paramedic and an ambulance on scene, with the male rider being given treatment at the roadside.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has 1 appliance on scene.
Police have closed the road in both directions with motorists being diverted locally via Blacklands Lane and Briddlesford Road.
Southern Vectis’ Route 9 buses are on diversion until further notice.
Other vehicles stopped at the scene – a Land Rover, Mini One and a BMW – have not been involved in the crash.
UPDATE @ 21:40 – A young male motorcyclist has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment tonight.
The road remains closed as initial investigations into the cause of the collision get underway.
Island Echo understands the motorcycle came into contact with a van, which was heading into Island Riding Centre.
UPDATE @ 23:59 – The road has now reopened.
