A motorcycle crash on the main road between Lake and Shanklin has closed the road in both directions this morning (Monday). The incident has occurred at Skew Bridge, where a yellow Yamaha has seemingly collided with a wall. It’s understood the bike was travelling towards Shanklin at the time. No other vehicles have been involved in the collision, which happened sometime around 03:30.
The motorcyclist has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital where doctors are currently assessing their injuries. Police have closed Sandown Road in both directions whilst they await an update from the hospital. The road is due to be closed today in any eventuality due to planned roadworks. The suspension of Island Line services is not connected, with a train fault being blamed for the cancellation of trains this morning.
UPDATE @ 09:45 – Police have confirmed that the rider of the motorcycle has suffered serious injuries, thought to be a number of broken bones. They remain in hospital at this time. Sandown Road has now re-opened following the crash, but roadworks are expected to take place today resulting in a further closure of the road.
