Morton Common between Brading and Sandown has been closed to motorists this afternoon (Sunday) due to the road being completely flooded.
Heavy rain and high river levels have led to the area being flooded overnight, resulting in the main road becoming impassable.
Island Roads have implemented an emergency road closure in the interests of safety. However, some drivers are choosing to ignore the road closure and are proceeding through the flood water anyway.
All traffic is currently being diverted via Yaverland and Culver Parade – an extra distance of around 1 mile.
A flood warning has been issued for the Eastern Year by the Environment Agency.
UPDATE @ 16:40 – Southern Vectis bus routes 2 & 3 are now on diversion.
“Morton Common has closed due to flooding. As a result, Routes 2&3 will divert from Sandown Victoria Road to Yaverland Road, Marshcombe Shute and Yarbridge Cross.
“Fort Mews, Moreys and Devonia stops will not be served.
“Apologies if affected”
UPDATE @ 18:18 – The rail replacement bus service being offered by Island Line is currently not serving Brading, Island Echo has been informed.
The buses are on diversion due to the Morton Common closure.
UPDATE MONDAY – Morton Common has now re-opened in both directions, although motorists should continue to take care as some flooding remains.

Well to me if so silly then deserve to get flooded, and when stuck in water and then say”OOPS DID NOT THINK SO DEEP” Plonkers ,wet Plonkeers
In English please
What a pathetic lot. This is not rallying up the Orinoco, it is a little muddy water on a very flat road on the tiny Isle of Wight.
With health and safety so ‘over the top’ in the UK with authorities afraid of being ‘sued’ if dire warnings are not posted on every ‘risk assessed situations most NORMAL people, take such ‘advice’ rightly with a pinch, or sack of salt.
Most unlikely to break down at all, and if it did, likely once the engine heat dries it, it will be fine.
That will only be if you drive too fast and very unlikely to happen.
All the stay at home arm chair frit, will be jubilant, SHOULD one car break down and the Fire brigade send five crews to ‘save’ them, but, as we know, the arm chair critics will say NOTHING when as is most likely, all the drivers get safely home, with dry socks and using THEIR common sense, NOT believing ever sign shown.
My 4×4 razzes up there no sweat. Fuss over nothing as you say mate.
You would never think that some on here lived through a war, seems to be a brainwashed terror filled nation if an inch or two of standing water scares them to death.
Remember wet brakes won’t stop you so well, so when out of the water, apply them a few times to dry them out.
Although modern vehicles do not suffer the wet weather breakdowns that many old ones did, they can ingest water through their engine air intakes causing a situation called ‘hydraulic seizure’. Without going into details this is not a good thing! Obey the signs or you may face a massive repair bill.
So many people ignoring the lockdown!
Same ones
If people are silly enough to ignore the warning signs then they should be left to their own devices if they get stuck
Whats it got to do with you lot if drivers want to drive through there! Just another reason to moan! Get a life and keep your boring opinions to yourselves
It’s called freedom of speech, people do have an opinion even if you don’t like that right…
Yet it’s fine to broadcast your opinion. Road closed means Road closed. It’s there for a reason, or is it just fine for everyone to make up their own rules?
Not at all, if there was signs indicating road closure then I can understand your frustration, and it’s also illegal to use a road that’s officially closed, I believe it could mean 3 points on their licence..
However, some opinions indicate stupid remarks, but some can be fare comment, we have all at some time made inappropriate remarks but that’s what free speech is all about.
Sadly Uncle Albert they do make up their own rules. If they didn’t then so many more people would still be alive.
There’s a flood, let’s drive through it.
There’s a wet paint sign, let’s touch it and find out.
There’s a (danger keep out ) warning, let’s go in and see.
There’s a deadly killer virus, it’s ok I wont get it, mines a pint please.
Won’t be long now before the government blaming crowd will be out in force saying it’s Boris’s fault for global warming causing the flood.
Probably all the DFLS In there Range Rovers
Yes came here just too drive through closed roads . You bigoted idiot
Pathetic dreg
Toot toot
A surprising number of car makes have electric cabling in the floor pan. This could be good way to find out.
All insulated, not bare wires, Just wait and SEE how many cars are ‘ruined’ I expect NONE.
One today needed a rescue.
What? Are you talking about EV’s? Their batteries are already cooled by liquid.
many years ago the council were told the road would need to be raised up because of more flooding in the future the council were given money to raise the road and they said it won’t flood so i wonder where the money has gone
On the disastrous ‘thing’ they call the floating ‘out of action for 6 months’ load of cr*p bridge….probably!!
Into their pension plan.
Ensure YOU vote them OUT then, you can do so by Post, so no risk of mixing or spreading whatever form of CV we at voting time have.
Don’t just moan, Do something about these leeches, bleeding the population for their affluent lifestyles to become ever more bloated.
Do you actually think voting on this island works?
It is ALL we have or do you think anarchy is the answer? I prefer the ballot box, with all it’s flaws.
Reminds me off a few years ago Council given £120mil from government to sort Coppins Bridge.. Instead they ruined a roundabout..
put the diversion signs at the mini roundabout in sandown instead of past the bridge and people may actually go along yaverland instead of risking it.
also, put a Flooding sign up instead of Road Ahead Closed. Make it clear what the problem is, in the right place, and diversions would work.
I hope they crack exhaust manifolds… stupid covidiots.. pure senseless drivers.. I do hope they get fined for going through road closed signage.. why are they driving around… what about the STAY HOME that is being sent out to everyone on radio and TV… ?? I hope they ruin their vehicles..
To be honest when anything ‘covid’ comes on the radio or TV, most people probably switch channels. I know I do.
Road Closure in force in my road for a couple of weeks – even the Police ignore it! Can anyone tell me if it is true – is car insurance void if you have an accident while driving along a ‘closed road’?
I went through it yesterday and cars where just flooding .it like an road wasn’t there it’s that flooded
