The Isle of Wight will be represented by both a Men’s and Women’s team at the Island Games in Guernsey – the same location where the Island secured its only Triathlon gold back in 2003.
The team is comprised of members of all 3 Island Triathlon clubs and is managed and coached by Liz Dunlop and Dan Shortman respectively – both of Wight Tri.
Vectis Academy is represented by Jake Brougham, who won the Wight Tri Spring Triathlon in what was his 1st ever event. Jan Fletcher of Wight Tri won the women’s event that day and both will be going for gold in Guernsey.
The standard triathlon distance at the Island Games however will present a greater challenge with it consisting of a 1,500m swim followed by a 40km cycle and a 10km run.
Guernsey is the site of the Isle of Wight’s only Triathlon gold medal at the Island Games, won by Chris Volley back in 2003 with a stunning time of 1:57:36. Volley also secured the Isle of Wight’s only other Triathlon medal at the previous Island Games held on the Isle of Man in 2001 when he claimed bronze.
The rest of the team is largely made up of Wight Tri members but IOW Triathlon Club is represented by Thomas Horton in the Men’s team and Lottie Van der Helstraete in the Women’s team.
Wight Tri are running a multi-sport event at Yaverland on Wednesday 28th June from 18:00 to raise funds in order to help the team travel to Guernsey. Full details can be found on their Facebook page.
