A man allegedly seen carrying a knife in a public place has been tasered and detained by Police in Ryde tonight (Wednesday).
Officers were alerted to the incident shortly before 21:00 and tracked a potential suspect down to an address on Melville Street.
It’s at a flat that Island Echo understands 1 male was tasered by Police. He has since been detained and taken to Newport Police Station for questioning following a check up by paramedics.
A second person – a woman – has also been detained by Police tonight. She has also been taken into custody.
It remains unclear why a fire alarm system in the block of flats was activated, but this prompted the turn out of 2 fire appliances from Ryde and 2 senior officers, as previously reported by Island Echo. Thankfully, no signs of fire have been identified and fire crews are standing down.
It’s thought a number of members of the public were in the area at the time of the incident. Anyone who witnessed the events unfold, or who saw a man with a knife, should contact Police on 101.
UPDATE THURSDAY – Police have confirmed that a 34-year-old man from Ryde was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and affray.
A 50-year-old woman from Ryde was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a constable in the execution of their duty (x2).
