UPDATED: Police on the Isle of Wight have responded to the attempted robbery of a Post Office in Ventnor by a man ‘armed with an axe’.

Officers descended on High Street, Ventnor at around 15:50 this afternoon with units responding from all directions; Whitwell, Whiteley Bank and Shanklin.

Locals have described seeing a man with an ‘axe’ attempting to rob the town’s Post Office before then turning his attention to a pet shop just a few doors away.

It’s unclear at this moment in time if the suspect has been detained by Police, who are still said to be present in the town in strong numbers.

Sources say the Post Office has now been closed.

UPDATE @ 18:00 – A 33-year-old man from Ventnor has been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery this evening.

Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that they were called to reports of a man carrying an axe on Ventnor High Street.

The man remains in Police custody.
