A French national has this morning been rescued from the waters of Portsmouth Harbour after going overboard from the Wightlink ferry.

It is understood that the man ended up in the icy waters shortly after boarding the ferry at the Gunwharf Terminal, however it is not currently unknown if the man fell or jumped from the vessel.

Rescue 104 coastguard helicopter and  the Gosport Independent lifeboat were scrambled to the scene after the ferry crew reported they had a man overboard.

A spokesman for Solent Coastguard said this afternoon that the man had intended to board a cross-Channel ferry to France however, by accident, boarded a ferry to the Isle of Wight.

The confused man was eventually rescued by the ferry company’s own rescue craft before being transferred to a police launch boat who took the shaken but uninjured man back to shore.
