UPDATED: A man has been arrested by Police in connection with a break in at a garage in Newport tonight (Monday).

An alarm activation prompted a response by staff to Prices Garage on Pan Lane sometime before 22:00. It’s here that a member of staff discovered damage to a door and the alarm sounding.

Island Echo understands that an unknown male was then found in the vicinity before being pinned to the ground and detained by a staff member until the arrival of Police.

Officers have taken the suspect into custody at Newport Police Station on suspicion of committing one or more offences.

Matthew Price of Price’s Garage has described his staff as ‘brave’.

UPDATE THURSDAY – Island Echo can now report that the man was wielding a crowbar when he was restrained by Prices Garage staff.

39-year-old Kevin Greenwood of Godric Road, Newport has been sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, for attempted burglary. He has received the same sentence – 12 weeks sentenced for 12 months – for going equipped.

Greenwood has been ordered to pay £1,100 in compensation to Prices Garage.
