EXCLUSIVE – A 58-year-old man has died while spending a penny at a local pub, but wasn’t discovered for nearly 8 hours after being locked in overnight.
Staff at the Folly Inn, Whippingham made the blunder after the unknown man died on Saturday evening while spending a penny, or two. Amazingly, the toilets were not checked before locking up for the night, leaving the deceased man slumped in the cubicle.
Cleaners made the shocking discovery at 06:30 on Sunday morning while opening the river-side pub before calling in Island Police.
Greene King, who also own Ryde Castle that went up in flames in March, said: “This has obviously been deeply upsetting for all those connected with the pub. We are doing all we can to assist the authorities with their enquiries and our thoughts are very much with the man’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
The man was pronounced dead at 07:45 Sunday morning. The Isle of Wight Coroner carried out a post mortem on Tuesday and it has been established that the man died of natural causes. No inquest will be opened.
