Police on the Isle of Wight have launched an investigation following the discovery of 1 person deceased and another in a life-threatening condition at a cottage on the outskirts of Chillerton.

Emergency services were called to an address on Berry Shute at Billingham at 22:20 last night (Sunday). It’s here that officers found an 87-year-old man dead inside the property and an 84-year-old woman in a life-threatening condition.

Whilst there was nothing that could be done for the deceased male, paramedics rushed the elderly woman to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport where she remains in a life-threatening condition this lunchtime.

The sleepy village is now at the centre of a detailed investigation which has seen Police keeping guard outside the quaint thatched property overnight and into this morning.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has told Island Echo:

“The death of the man is currently being treated as unexplained and investigations are ongoing into the circumstances of this incident.

“At this time, we do not believe that anyone else has been involved in what has happened at this address.

“Next of kin have been informed”.

Forensic examinations at the detached dwelling are expected to take place today.
