A 41-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a serious assault on a woman in Ryde on Christmas Eve.
Police responded to West Street at just before 22:30 last night (Friday) after receiving reports that a woman had been assaulted.
Officers arrived on scene, near the junction with Arthur Street, to find a 42-year-old woman with serious head injuries.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service conveyed the victim to St Mary’s Hospital, where she remains in a serious condition.
Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that a 41-year-old man from Ryde was arrested earlier today (Christmas Day) on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in custody at Newport Police Station at this time.
Officers remain parked outside 4 maisonettes on West Street this afternoon, as detectives continue to investigate the incident and question their prime suspect.
