A serious road traffic collision has resulted in the closure of the main Newport to Sandown road at Arreton this morning (Saturday).
Police have closed the road between Watery Lane and Downend Road as a result of an incident in the area of Hale Common.
The crash is thought to have occurred shortly before midnight and involves an unknown number of vehicles and individuals.
A local air ambulance has landed at the roadside indicating the severity of the situation.
Southern Vectis are advising that their Route 8 buses are currently unable to serve between Arreton Barns and The Fighting Cocks.
UPDATE @ 01:25 – 1 person is thought to have been flown from the scene to the major trauma centre at Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
Island Echo understands there may be other casualties, but Police are yet to comment on the details of the collision.
The road is expected to remain closed overnight and into daylight hours as investigations take place.
UPDATE @ 07:40 – The road remains closed this morning as investigations continue into the circumstances of the crash. The Collision Investigation Unit from the mainland is on scene.
It is understood that fire crews from Newport and Shanklin were mobilised to the scene last night.
Hampshire Constabulary is expected to issue an update within the next couple of hours.
Motorists are warned that the main road is expected to remain closed for a while yet.
UPDATE @ 10:45 – A 19-year-old girl was killed in last night’s incident, it has been confirmed.
The road has now reopened to traffic.
