Police are responding to a tanker that has rolled onto its side on Blackwater Road between Arreton and Newport this afternoon (Monday).

It is currently unclear whether there has been any spillage from the heavy vehicle.

Motorists should avoid the area.

UPDATE @ 17:00 – A silver sewage tanker with a white cab has rolled off the carriageway, through a hedge and come to rest in a field.

Fuel and the lorry’s contents are thought to be leaking from the overturned vehicle.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have mobilised an appliance from Newport to the scene and have requested an additional appliance from Shanklin. The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are now also in attendance.

The incident has occurred on the Arreton side of the Isle of Wight Distribution depot. As a result of the crash, all Southern Vectis Route 2 buses are diverting via Rookley until further notice.

UPDATE @ 17:15 – Police have now fully closed the road in both directions between Merstone Lane and Blackwater Hollow.

2 recovery trucks from Stag Lane Motors are now in attendance. Their 6×6 Foden heavy recovery unit is one of the vehicles on the scene.

The tanker is said to be carrying a ‘non-hazardous product’, understood to be sewage.

The driver has escaped the vehicle via its sunroof.

UPDATE @ 17:40 – The main road between Newport and Arreton remains closed during rush hour while work to recover the tanker is carried out.

UPDATE @ 18:40 – A hard road closure is now in place. Recovery of the HGV continues.

UPDATE TUESDAY – The road is now open in both directions.
