Hampshire Constabulary were made aware of the find on a stretch of beach between Appley and Springvale at just before 10:40.
Officers arrived at the scene to examine the remains with initial inspections suggesting that they had been under the sand for a ‘considerable amount of time’.
Forensic teams have now recovered the bones from thick clay around 20 metres to the north of the sea wall.
Specialist analysis of the remains will now take place.
Editor’s footnote: Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that an error was made in their statement yesterday; the remains were found at Springvale near Ryde, not at Wootton Bridge as previously reported.
