Firefighters are rushing to the scene of a house fire in the village of Niton this morning (Friday).

Smoke can be seen issuing from a property on Blackgang Road, at the start of the village’s one-way traffic system.

Members of the public summoned fire crews by dialling 999 at around 11:00.

UPDATE @ 11:15 – The first appliances are now on scene – 1 from Ventnor and 1 from Newport.

Firefighters are using water to dowse the flames having gained access to the property equipped with breathing apparatus equipment. A hose reel jet is also being used externally.

The road is currently blocked by the appliances whilst crews deal with the emergency.

UPDATE @ 11:30 – A total of 4 appliances have now been mobilised to the incident, according to fire control. Additional crews from Shanklin and Newport are en-route to the incident.

No one is thought to be inside the property.

Southern Vectis say that all Route 6 and Island Coaster buses are having to divert via Appleford and Chale to reach Blackgang.

Police have closed the road in both directions.

UPDATE @ 12:10 – Fire crews are thought to have now extinguished the fire, an hour after arriving on scene.

Although no persons have been injured, there is thought to be a significant level of smoke damage to the home.

Crews remain on scene damping down and clearing smoke from the property.
