The road connecting Havenstreet and Binstead has been closed for emergency works by Island Roads this morning (Thursday), adding to the travel misery already being experienced by motorists.
Havenstreet Main Road has been closed in both directions between Firestone Copse Road and Stroudwood Road/Newnham Road, meaning motorists attempting to avoid the closure at Binstead Road are unable to do so.
During the major resurfacing works at Binstead, light traffic has been diverting via Havenstreet or Firestone Copse, Stroudwood Road and Carters Road to Smallbrook Roundabout to bypass around Ryde.
But the location of this emergency closure by Island Roads, for drainage works, means that traffic must now use The Downs – where there are still temporary traffic lights at Downend – or travel through Binstead Estate.
Alternatively, traffic can still use Stroudwood Road but then travel along Newnham Road to re-join the main road between Newport and Ryde at Binstead Hill.
Binstead Road is to remain closed between Ringwood Road and Queens Road until 30th January. It will then reopen during the major Southern Water scheme at Elenors Grove, Quarr before closing again in April.
It is unclear when Havenstreet will reopen.
UPDATE @ 12:14 – Island Roads has completed the works in super quick time, with the road now reopen to all traffic.

Close Brading High Street and then it will be check mate.
Lol
The island is gradually being put in Lockdown.
Omg how can island roads be so frigging incompetent pathetic
I wandered how long it would be before they ballsed up the alternative routes, just a matter of days wasn’t it.
