UPDATED: Firefighters have been called to a potential hazardous materials incident at a care home in Ryde this afternoon (Thursday).
1 appliance from Ryde has been mobilised to the Easthill Home for the Deaf on Pitt Street, Swanmore.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were alerted at 12:44.
Island Echo understands the incident is centered around the building’s boiler room.
Investigations are underway, but the incident is not thought to be significant.
There are no casualties.
UPDATE @ 13:51 – A full inspection of the property has been carried after a strong chemical smell was discovered near the boiler. However, no obvious cause for the smell has been found.
Firefighters are liaising with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Hazmat Officer.
UPDATE @ 14:39 – It has been identified that the smell was a result of fumes coming from a faulty tumble dryer.
