New data released by the Government shows that no asylum seekers were being housed in hotels on the Isle of Wight in June – but rumours continue to the current day about new arrivals.
The Home Office has this week revealed the figures for the total number of asylum seekers being housed across the country, although the data is now almost 2 months out of date. It shows that some 32,059 people are being put up in hotels at the taxpayer’s expense, up 8% year-on-year.
It’s been confirmed that the Isle of Wight Council is 1 of 30 local authorities that have not taken in asylum seekers, out of 390 local authorities across the United Kingdom. A total of 91% of local authorities now have asylum seekers in them, up a staggering amount from 27% just 10 years ago.
It is known that the Isle of Wight has assisted a total of 313 Ukrainians under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, and 11 Afghans under the Afghan Resettlement Scheme.
Despite a lack of evidence to support the claims, just this week, Island Echo has had multiple reports of coachloads of illegal immigrants – or asylum seekers – arriving on the Isle of Wight and being put up in hotels or campsites.
Other rumours say that hotels in Sandown are being ‘done up’ ready to house individuals.
It seems unlikely that the Isle of Wight will suddenly become host to those seeking asylum, given the news out of Epping this week. The Epping Forest District Council managed to secure a temporary injunction preventing asylum seekers from being housed in an Essex hotel, something that Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick has acknowledged as ‘leading the way’.
The Labour Government has pledged to end the use of costly hotel accommodation by 2029.
Gosh, racists all over the island will be greatly relieved. It’s time to reveal the source of the false reports and rumours.

These people are NOT asylum seekers. They left France, which is a European Democracy, not a war zone, in a rubber dinghy to come to the UK where they are treated better than having to live in tents on French beaches and certainly much better than our own dispossessed.
They are ILLEGAL immigrants of which 80% or more are men under the age of 30, who have thrown away all means of identification, who have turned a two mile stretch of beautiful beach from Southbourne to Sandbanks into an “Ogling young ladies” attraction. Bournemouth has BECOME a war zone.

I don’t have a problem with asylum seekers, it is the illegal immigrants that I worry about. They could be terrorists for all we know a it seems minimal checks are made. But this government and previous governments seem to have their hands tied. There is a simple way to sort it, anybody who enters illegally has broken the law, anybody entering who breaks the law should be told they cannot claim asylum and be deported. Loads have come via safe countries where if they have families here can apply legally to come here to join them. Others are in debt to the gangs that run the boats and then trafficked into all sorts of illegal work. Also if they need accommodation, Camp Hill is empty.
There is an unspoken reality that the majority of illegal immigrants become after arrival so called asylum seekers,the coaching they receive by legal firms, immigrant supporting groups who receive taxpayer funding for their endeavours means they are better prepared for their court cases than our pupils taking exams. Fact Albanian politicians openly talk how crime has dropped dramtically since so many decided the UK was the country of their choice

Be careful what you wish for regarding Camphill. Why has it not had anything done to it in all the years that its been closed?Hundreds of illegals could, and probably will, be accommodated in there and you’ve just got to hope that they are properly locked up. My prediction is that it will be in full use before the next General Election.
Ypu are wide of the mark, if it has had no mainteneence then we will not be housing asylum seekers there, they have to have four star as a minimum, with fast internet for their tax payer supplied mobile phones, colour tele’s in each room and three chef produced meals per day, plus the daily financial allowance they are given, what a gerat use of taxpayer money.
