Police, fire and ambulance crews are attending a crash at Whiteley Bank on the outskirts of Shanklin this afternoon (Tuesday), with fears of a gas leak posing a risk to the public.
The incident has occurred on a driveway outside a residential address on Shanklin Road near to the roundabout junction connecting Shanklin, Wroxall and Godshill.
It’s said that a car – a fully electric Renault Zoe – has crashed into a gas main outside the property.
3 fire appliances from Ryde, Shanklin and Ventnor are on scene alongside several police units and also crews from the Isle of Wight Ambulance service.
Island Echo understands 1 elderly person is currently being freed from the car by means of a roof removal.
No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the incident, which occurred at around 15:35.
An engineer from SGN is also in attendance to help assess and isolate the gas supply.
The road is closed in both directions and Southern Vectis is advising of delays and diversions to its services in the area.
Traffic is heavy in the area on all approaches.
UPDATE @ 16:42 – 1 person has now been transferred into an awaiting ambulance and is expected to be conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital.
The road remains closed as firefighters work to make the scene completely safe and make up their kit.
UPDATE @ 17:01 – Jeff Walls, Tactical Advisor for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, has confirmed that the gas main is safe.
Fire crews are now standing down from the incident but the road remains closed whilst the vehicle is recovery.
UPDATE @ 18:30 – The road has now reopened.
All Southern Vectis buses are reverting to a normal route.
Take the old codger’s licence away.
Probably high on pollen.
When you know what you’re talking about please comment. That’s a member of my extended family so stfu!!
Lynn, I hope that your family member hasn’t been to badly injured and I wish them a speedy recovery.
As a side note to all who are judging the driver’s ability, there are many reasons why this may have happened. Please show some respect for all who’ve been affected by it. God forbid you, or any of your family have an accident. Would you be so quick to judge then?? I think not.
Thanks Daniel. Whilst it’s none of anyone else’s business, it was a medical episode and that’s all I shall say about it!! As for the gobby brigade, once this happens to someone you know & love, let me know how it feels to have some cock womble spout off about something they know nothing about & basically letting the Islanders know what a dick you really are!
One word to end – KARMA!!
AND……………?
Perhaps the gas main is at fault (it jumped into the road).
Really????
Please get back in your box until all the facts are established. This is somebody’s family member.
Let’s hope nothing ever happens to someone you know…… would you be so judgemental then?
Errr….YES … what point are you trying to make ?
DON’T EVER COMMENT ON ANY NEWS ARTICLE EVER !
Incase they might be related to someone ?
Typical island idiot.
What a stupid comment stfu unless you know all the facts and there is only 1 person that knows what happened and that is the driver. I hope the person involved has a speedy recovery
Licence withdrawn…elderly v how can that happen!
The road is open now, just drove through.
hope you ok and all is well in the end
Several police units just why? If it was a 4 car crash how many would there be then?
Because it’s an electric car they are not the answer and they are falsely hyped as going to save the planet.
Also should not be sold to the elderly as they are uncontrollable if you are not on the ball.
Should have taken a roadside drug test lol. These oldies are tanked up on pills and potions, driving around in la la land.
Does anyone ever proof read your articles?
I would have thought this was a genuine medical situation, unlike the uneducated, brain-dead, drugged up, drunk so called drivers that are like a cancer on our island today..
EXACTLY WHY THE ELDERLY SHOULD NOT DRIVE !
Not rocket……..
And just because it happens to be someone’s relitive…who gives a **** !
Ting tong, your comments are consistently badly written, displaying a woeful illiteracy, and an inability to form a rational argument. Worse, they are seriously ageist and otherwise insulting, therefore valuless.
I wonder what made you into such a sad loser, but I don’t care or have any sympathy for you.
Until you manage to grow up, you should stop commenting and try to get properly educated.
You really need some kind of medication, you must be on day release….go back
Isn’t it about time for you to sod off back to Tooting
Isn’t it about time the numptys and idiot’s who are rude and make inane comments are barred !!!!
Unless you know the facts please don’t bother …
The person had a medical episode …
Wishing him and all his family a swift recovery..
Meanwhile don’t waste your effort in marking these attention seeking pr- – – s down they probably enjoy it !!!!!@
