The discovery of a sinkhole on St John’s Hill in Ryde – 1 of the main routes through the town – has led to 3-way temporary traffic lights being erected, which will almost certainly cause significant travel disruption throughout today (Tuesday).
It was around 18:00 yesterday evening that engineers were called out to inspect the carriageway failure, which has taken place at the junction with St John’s Wood Road.
A sizable hole has appeared on the eastbound carriageway, meaning motorists are having to travel on the opposite side of the road. As a result, 3-way temporary traffic lights have been put in place.
Lengthy delays are expected so motorists should divert locally via the Esplanade or Smallbrook Lane.
Southern Vectis has confirmed that its Route 2, 3 and 8 buses both in and out of Ryde will be diverting via East Hill Road. Buses will divert via Park Road, Esplanade and East Hill Road before joining the normal route.
UPDATE @ 09:30 – Southern Vectis says that buses will now return to a normal route as the road is open under lights.
UPDATE @ 15:17 – Island Roads say they hope to have the road re-opened fully, with the traffic lights removed, by lunchtime on Wednesday.
