More than 20 employees from businesses based at Fortis House in Ryde received a free health MOT last week, thanks to a visit from The Lighthouse Clinic arranged with help from Island Echo.
Newport-based The Lighthouse Clinic provides free NHS Health Checks for those aged between 40 and 74, with mini health checks also offered to under-40s.
The checks are designed to spot the early signs of stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, type 2 diabetes and dementia. Each appointment includes a review of lifestyle, medical history, blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI and other key indicators to help identify potential health risks before they become more serious.
It was during an Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce Business Brunch that Island Echo first learnt of the free, local service. Quickly seeing the benefits, publisher Darren Toogood got in touch with Malcolm White at The Lighthouse Clinic to arrange checks for the whole team.

Realising that other businesses at Fortis House could benefit too, Island Echo worked to extend the opportunity to others in the building.
Thanks to the support of landlords Fortis Energy, the building’s meeting room was used over 2 days to accommodate health checks for some 24 staff members.
Darren Toogood, Editor/Publisher, says:
“Staff wellbeing is really important to us, and this was a great chance to promote that in a meaningful and accessible way.
“When we realised how simple it was to arrange and the quality of the checks being offered, it felt like a no-brainer to involve others in the building”.

“The Lighthouse Clinic provides free NHS Health Checks for those aged between 40 and 74, with mini health checks also offered to under-40s.”
Does that mean anyone who meets the above criteria can have a free health check?
The Lighthouse Clinic offers similar checks that persons between the age of 40 – 74 should receive from their GP every 5 years. Exceptions are those who have had a check within 5 years or suffer with cardiovascular conditions and would normally be monitored by their GP or Hospital. If someone calls the clinic, a member of the team will go through the criteria with them and can book them in if eligible. At this time mini health checks can only be offered when visiting organisations outside the clinic.
