UPDATED: Firefighters from Newport and Freshwater are tackling a tree fire in Brighstone this evening (Saturday).
1 appliance from Newport was mobilised to the scene off Upper Lane at just gone 20:00.
A tree is well alight with an orange glow produced from the flames that have engulfed it.
Due to the size of the fire and it’s remote location, Freshwater Fire Station’s water carrier has been mobilised to the incident.
It’s thought a bonfire has spread to the nearby tree.
UPDATE SUNDAY – It has been confirmed that the fire was caused by stray embers from a nearby bonfire.
Crews used a 135 ladder and a hose reel to reach the top of the tree and fully extinguish the flames.
Firefighters from Green Watch at Newport Fire Station have said:
“This was extremely awkward to extinguish due to the wind, height and the fire working its way internally through the rotted areas. Please think about fire spread when having a bonfire
