A fire at a chip shop in Ryde this morning (Sunday) has resulted in a call out for firefighters from across the Isle of Wight.
Crews from Ryde, Newport and Shanklin are on scene at The Codfather fish and chip shop having been called at around 09:45.
Firefighters equipped in breathing apparatus have used hose reel jets and main jets to tackle the blaze.
Thankfully, the chippy – and surrounding premises – were quickly evacuated. It is thought that no one has been injured.
Island Echo understands that the fire started in the commercial premises before spreading to the upstairs dwelling.
Having got control of the initial blaze, firefighters are now checking for any remaining hotspots as well as usuing ventilation fans to clear any lingering smoke.
Esplanade remains passable to traffic heading towards Appley, but traffic is heavier than usual.
Emergency crews are expected to remain on scene for some time.
It is unclear at this time how the incident occurred.
UPDATE @ 10:40 – The aerial ladder platform from Newport is being utilised to check on the roof of the building.
The once-billowing smoke has now been cleared.
Traffic heading along Esplanade toward Appley is currently being diverted through Ryde Bus Station.
UPDATE @ 13:00 – It has been confirmed that a deep fat fryer was to blame for the blaze. Thankfully, good smoke detection and swift work from firefighters resulted in the incident being not as bad as first feared.
