UPDATED: FIREFIGHTERS TACKLE HOUSE FIRE IN RYDE


The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have mobilised to a property fire in Ryde this morning (Sunday).

Crews were called at around 11:45 to smoke coming from a residential property on Park Road, between Riboleau Street and Player Street.

3 fire appliances – 2 from Ryde and 1 from Newport – have been sent to the address alongside the Incident Command Unit from Newport and a duty fire officer. A fourth appliance from East Cowes was mobilised by control but has since been stood down from the incident.

The road has been closed in both directions whilst firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackle the fire using 2 hose reels.

Southern Vectis buses are currently diverting locally with Routes 2, 3 and 8 affected. Buses to divert from Ryde Bus Station via Dover Street, Wood Street and Monkton Street. Buses heading into Ryde will divert from Bennett Street, Dover Street, Melville Street and Cross Street.

UPDATE @ 12:30 – Although it was initially feared by the fire service that persons were inside the building, it has been confirmed to Island Echo in the past few minutes that all persons have been accounted for.

The occupier was walking her dog in the local area and returned home to discover the incident unfolding.

The fire – which broke out in a ground floor room – has now been extinguished and positive pressure ventilation is being used to clear the semi-detached property of smoke.

2 appliances from Ryde remain on scene.

Police are in attendance at Park Road but it is unclear at this time if the incident is being treated as suspicious.

UPDATE @ 14:15 – The house has been saved from destruction, but substantial smoke damage has been sustained.

The adjoining property has also sustained some damage but thanks to the efforts of a second breathing apparatus team the damage has been contained.

The British Red Cross are now assisting the homeowners.

Park Road has re-opened in both directions.
