A single fire crew from East Cowes is tackling a van fire on Victoria Grove this morning (Sunday).
The incident occurred at around 23:45 and has seen an Isle of Wight Distribution Van catch fire.
The fire started underneath the van and quickly spread, engulfing the engine bay in a matter of minutes, with it suggested that an accelerant spray was applied to the front wheels.
1 pumping appliance from East Cowes was present and firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus used hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze.
Whilst it hasn’t been determined how the fire was started, it looks as if the way the blaze started is similar to incidents that occurred elsewhere in the town before Christmas.
The road is currently blocked.
UPDATE @ 00:21 – Firefighters forced entry to the cab of the vehicle using hose reel jets to ensure the cab was clear.
The blaze has been contained and the wreckage taped off. Firefighters are currently ensuring the scene is safe.
Police are now in attendance and are taking statements from witnesses on Victoria Grove, whilst firefighters ensure that any goods in the back of the van are free of smoke, removing those that have someone managed to escape the blaze.
UPDATE @ 01:20 – Whilst it hasn’t been confirmed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, it is believed that these 2 incidents are very closely related to those that took place on York Avenue in December.
Further update is expected in the morning (Sunday).
