UPDATED: 3 fire appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have been mobilised to The Broadway petrol station in Sandown this morning (Sunday) over fears of a fire.
The alarm was raised at around 06:25 and has prompted the turn out of crews from Ryde, Shanklin and Newport.
Firefighters are currently inspecting an area of the on site Co-Operative store, where it is feared a fire has broke out.
UPDATE @ 06:55 – Following an initial inspection, the incident has been promptly scaled back with just 1 appliance from Shanklin remaining on scene.
The single crew – accompanied by an on call duty officer – are using an extension ladder to inspect what is thought to be the ceiling area.
Power remains on in the building.
It is expected that the petrol station will re-open as normal later today.
UPDATE – It has been confirmed that smoke was seen issuing from a refrigeration unit within the convenience store.
The unit was isolated and the area checked.
