FIRE BREAKS OUT AT NEWPORT’S ISLE OF WIGHT PET CENTRE

UPDATE: The Isle of Wight Fire and Recue Service are tackling a fire at the Isle of Wight Pet Centre in Newport tonight (Monday).

5 appliances, the aerial ladder platform from Ryde and the Incident Command Unit from Newport are on scene at Watergate Road, alongside 3 duty officers and paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.

The alarm was raised at just gone 23:00.

Crews have donned breathing apparatus and have entered the building where it is said there is a fire on the ground floor.

UPDATE @ 23:55 – The fire has been brought under control thanks to the swift actions of crews from Newport, Cowes, East Cowes and Ryde.

1 appliance and the aerial ladder platform have already been stood down, with 4 appliances remaining on scene at this time.

It is unclear if any persons or animals have been injured.

Inspections of the loft space are being conducted to ensure the fire has not spread.

UPDATE @ 00:23 – The incident is being scaled back with further crews expected to return to station shortly. However, work continues to fully extinguish the fire and damp down the affected areas.

Members of staff, friends and family of those connected with the business are at the scene on Watergate Road and are working with the fire service to manage the situation.

UPDATE @ 07:05 – Sadly, it has been confirmed that several animals have died as a result of the fire.
