UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are tackling a fire at Lynnbottom Household Waste and Recycing Centre (HWRC) on the outskirts of Newport this afternoon (Sunday).

1 appliance from Newport and the water carrier from Ventnor were called to the tip off Briddlesford Road at around 13:45.

Island Echo understands a fire has broke out in one of the large waste skips.

Lynnbottom is closed to the public whilst the incident is dealt with.

UPDATE @ 14:25 – Lynnbottom HWRC has now re-opened to the public.

Fire crews have stood down from the incident having extinguished the small fire.

UPDATE @ 20:40 – The Isle of Wight Council have thanked the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue for their speedy response today.

It has been confirmed that the small fire was caused by hot ash being placed in the general waste skip.

The Council are urging Islanders not to put themselves or others at risk by placing hot ash in bins/skips. These should be disposed of when cold.
