UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are tackling a field fire beside the steam railway line in Ashey this afternoon (Thursday).
3 appliances – 2 from Ryde and 1 from Newport – are on scene off Deacons Lane, where a line side embankment fire has spread to a field.
A water carrier from Ventnor has also been mobilised to the incident, which is in a remote area between Ashey Road and Station Road to the north side of the railway line.
The fire service say the alarm was raised shortly before 15:10 with 1 appliance from Newport sent to investigate. The first appliance arrived in the field at around 15:35, with the assistance of appliances from Ryde then requested at 15:39.
UPDATE @ 16:35 – It has been confirmed that the fire has affected some 3 hectares of field.
Crews are continuing to work to extinguish the fire and damp down the area.
No persons or animals have been injured.
UPDATE @ 17:16 – The fire has been extinguished using beaters and hose reels.
