A tree has fallen and blocked the main B road between Newport and Freshwater this morning (Monday).
The tree, which has blocked the entire width of the carriageway, has meant Calbourne Road (The Middle Road) has been closed to all traffic in both directions.
It is thought the tree has come down somewhere between Betty Haunt Lane and Elm Lane near to Rob Kingswell Haulage’s yard.
Drivers are currently diverting via Forest Road/Yarmouth Road.
Island Roads contractors are thought to have been called to assist in removing the tree and hope to have the road open by first light.
Take care out there this morning, there are some strong winds battering the island with a weather warning in place until 09:00.
If you come across a tree or any other obstruction in the carriageway then call Island Roads’ 24 hour call centre on 01983 822440.
UPDATE @ 01:23 – An Island Roads spokesperson has said:
“The middle road between The Sun Inn and Swainston Manor, Calbourne is closed due to a fallen tree blocking the carriageway.
“Crew are on their way to close the road and put advance warning signs in place.”
The road is expected to remain closed for some time.

Would that be by any chance one of the trees island roads sprayed weeks ago to be cut down ????
