The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard and Cowes RNLI lifeboat have all been involved in tackling a boat fire on the River Medina this morning (Monday).
Crews from East Cowes and Cowes swung into action at around 00:30 following reports of a vessel ablaze on the Cowes side of the river.
Firefighters initially mobilised to the Cowes Floating Bridge on Medina Road. It was from there that they sighted the incident location resulting in the relocation of 2 appliances to an area of Medina Yard off Arctic Road.
At around 00:55 the assistance of Cowes RNLI was requested to aid in the firefighting efforts. Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team were also tasked to the scene.
One eyewitness has told Island Echo that flares on board the boat were being discharged as a result of the fire, adding to the risk for the emergency services dealing with the incident.
The vessel, thought to be a RIB, has been destroyed by the blaze and has sunk below the water.
The cause is unknown at this time.
UPDATE – The incident has been handed over to Cowes Harbour Master.
No one was injured in the fire.
