A young male has been arrested at the scene of a serious head-on collision in Havenstreet tonight (Wednesday) in which 3 people have been injured. Emergency services were called to Havenstreet Main Road, near to the junction with Firestone Copse Road, at around 20:45 when a white Vauxhall Corsa collided with another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. Both cars have ended up partially off the road, with 3 elderly people – all from the same vehicle – sustaining injuries. The driver of the Corsa – a young male – has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences and has been taken into custody at Newport Police Station. He had a number of passengers in the vehicle at the time of the crash. At the same time, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has rushed the 3 casualties to St Mary’s Hospital where they are undergoing further assessment.
Cordons have been erected to lock down the scene as Police await an injury update from doctors. 3 vehicles that were passing the scene remain within the inner cordon but have not been directly involved in the crash. The road is to remain closed in both directions for several more hours – potentially for the duration of the night and into tomorrow morning.
UPDATE THURSDAY – A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing serious injury by careless driving. Main Road, Havenstreet remains closed to all traffic this morning as investigations continue.
