The discovery of a man’s body onboard a boat led to an emergency response to Island Harbour this morning (New Year’s Eve), with investigations into the circumstances of the death continuing.
Police, paramedics and coastguards attended the scene at Mill Lane on the outskirts of Newport at around 09:30.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service deployed an ambulance and an operational commander, whilst HM Coastguard tasked Ventnor and Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Teams.
Sadly, there was nothing that could be done to save the man’s life and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives from Newport CID were called to examine the boat to establish the circumstances surrounding the death, with initial investigations concluding that the death is currently unexplained.
It’s understood the man’s body was found on the outside of the vessel.
Investigations are continuing at this time, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed.
Officers were seen to seize a blood-smeared carrier bag containing bottles of alcohol this morning.
