A cordon has been erected around Serenity’s over fears for public safety as masonry and slates crash to the ground.
1 appliance and an aerial ladder platform from Ryde are on scene having been called out at around 11:20.
Southern Vectis buses are diverting locally.
UPDATE @ 12:27 – A building inspector from the Isle of Wight Council has been called to assess the safety of the building.
With wind speed expected to increase this afternoon there are fears for the integrity of the structure.
Sandown High Street is to remain closed for the time being.
Meanwhile, firefighters are assisting in keeping homes and businesses running as normal. Firefighter Smith from Ryde is photographed below delivering fruit and veg through the cordon to the Ocean Deck.
UPDATE @ 14:25 – A hard road closure is being put in place on Sandown High Street by Island Roads, indicating that the busy through road may be closed for a significant period of time.
The one-way system on Albert Road between Station Avenue and the High Street is to be reversed to allow access to the High Street.
