Firefighters rushed to the Isle of Wight Crematorium after it was reported that a fire had broken out mid-service.
It was around 12:00 this lunchtime (Tuesday) that all persons were evacuated from the building at Whippingham when the alarms sounded.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was quickly alerted, with appliances mobilised from a number of stations.
However, the fire was out on arrival of the first crew from Newport.
A quick investigation was carried out, with the building declared safe.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has said:
“Firefighters were called to a crematorium in Newport at around midday.
“Crews arrived to find the fire was already out.”
No action was taken by fire crews before the stop message came in at 12:17.

Holy Smoke !!
Holy Smoke !
It’s the island echo right there!☝
Private Eye are going to love the ‘Fire at crematorium’ headline
There’s got to be a joke here, somewhere…
Ah, there’s always a fire at the crematorium.
Yep that’s a good one..a Flaming good one!
Disgusting comments – though about what I expected given the nature of the building and a fire.
However, think about the family there at the time; grieving a loved one; having their service disrupted. Shame on all of you who think thinks this is worthy of an opportunity to make a cheap jokey keyboard comment.
Love and best wishes to those affected by this incident. xx
i totally agree poor taste for sure.
Grow up and get a life you miserable sod. So it seems that you are definitely one of the island “Snowflakes”.
It’s almost like that’s what they are there for.
