A 2-car crash is causing delays on a major route between the seaside towns of Sandown and Shanklin this morning (Tuesday). The incident – which occurred on Sandown Road, Lake at just before 08:15 – has seen a Ford Fiesta and a Nissan Micra collide head-on with one another. Both motors have sustained significant front-end damage owing to the force of the impact. All involved have been able to free themselves from the damaged vehicles.
Fire appliances from Sandown and Shanklin are present at the Lake/Sandown side of Skew Bridge alongside paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, including an Operational Commander. The road is currently blocked in both directions. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the time being with all traffic being diverted via Green Lane.
UPDATE @ 09:32 – The driver of the Fiesta – a young male – has been taken to hospital for further assessment. His injuries are not thought to be serious. Recovery of the vehicles is underway and the road is expected to reopen shortly.
UPDATE @ 11:45 – Both vehicles have been cleared and Skew Bridge has now reopened.
