Fire crews have been called to a road traffic collision on The Downs near Knighton this morning (Tuesday) .
2 appliances from Ryde are on scene between the turning for Brading Downs Road and the junction of Knighton Shute, alongside police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service (IOWAS).
Emergency services were called into action at just before 07:30 as a result of the collision between what is thought to be 2 cars and a van.
Officers are investigating whether the driver of 1 of the vehicles has suffered a medical episode at the wheel.
The road has been closed in both directions and traffic is heavy in the area as a result. Motorists should divert via Apse Heath, Havenstreet or Wootton.
UPDATE @ 08:30 – The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has been called to the scene at the request of IOWAS.
The green and yellow helicopter has touched down in a field beside the carriageway.
UPDATE @ 09:21 – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has now stood down from the incident. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has also departed the scene after being called in as a precautionary measure.
The crash has involved a Vauxhall Corsa and a Dacia Duster.
Police remain on scene awaiting recovery of the 2 vehicles.
The road remains closed.
UPDATE @ 10:20 – The Downs Road has now re-opened in both directions.
1 person has been taken to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance.
