A road traffic collision involving a motorcycle has resulted in Long Lane on the outskirts of Newport being closed in both directions this afternoon (Thursday).
Emergency services are rushing to the scene near Landscape Lane, where it is understood a car and a motorcycle have collided.
Island Echo understands the road has been closed between Staplers Gyratory and Landscape Lane.
Traffic on surrounding roads, including Staplers Road, is extremely heavy. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
Southern Vectis’ bus Route 8 is on diversion via Staplers Road and Briddlesford Road until further notice.
Bus stops at Buckbury Lane to Downend cannot be served in either direction.
UPDATE @ 16:30 – A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said that it is believed that 1 person – the motorcyclist – has suffered minor injuries.
Paramedics are still working to stabilise the casualty, however.
The occupants of the car involved – a black Vauxhall Corsa – have escaped injury.
UPDATE @ 17:05 – Police say they are now treating the incident as serious with hard road closures requested.
The motorcyclist remains on scene but has been transferred into an awaiting ambulance for onward conveyance to hospital.
Traffic remains heavy in the area.
UPDATE @ 18:10 – The motorcyclist’s injuries are not as serious as first feared, Police have confirmed.
As a result the road will be re-opening shortly following recovery of the vehicles.
UPDATE @ 18:50 – The road has now re-opened in both directions.
