UPDATED: Emergency services including police, fire and ambulance crews are attending a road traffic collision at Apse Heath this afternoon (Wednesday).
The main A3056 between Sandown and Newport is currently blocked in both directions.
Island Echo understands that multiple emergency teams are on scene including firefighters and a Co-Responder from Ventnor. They were alerted at around 14:45.
The incident has occurred between the Apse Heath roundabout and Sandown Airport.
Motorists should avoid the area.
UPDATE @ 15:34 – 2 vehicles have been involved in this afternoon’s crash – a VW Polo and a Mitshubishi Colt.
An elderly male is currently receiving medical treatment from paramedics having been helped from his vehicle.
Island Echo understands 1 of the cars left the road, mounted a grass verge and smashed into the oncoming car.
The road remains closed in both directions with traffic reported to be heavy on diversion routes.
Recovery has been arranged.
UPDATE @ 16:45 – Newport Road has now been re-opened in both directions in time for the evening rush hour.
The elderly male has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital.
Southern Vectis buses are returning to a normal timetabled route.
