A pedestrian has suffered serious injuries following a road traffic collision involving an ambulance and a van in Wootton this afternoon (Tuesday). Emergency service personnel were called to High Street at around 13:40 following reports of a collision just outside Tesco Express. The crash has seen an ambulance travelling towards Ryde collide with a Ford Fiesta van, resulting in the works vehicle ending up on the pavement. A private garden wall has been damaged as a result. A pedestrian has been injured in the incident, suffering what Police are describing as ‘serious but not life-threatening injuries’. Several resources from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service including an Operational Commander and Critical Care Paramedic are on scene tending to those involved. The Fiesta driver has not sustained any serious injuries, Island Echo understands.
A single fire appliance from Ryde has also been called to the scene in the interests of safety, using chocks to ensure the hatchback is stable. The road is currently blocked between Brannon Way and Rectory Drive with motorists diverting locally using St Edmunds Walk and Mary Rose Avenue. Southern Vectis buses are all diverting via St Edmunds Walk.
UPDATE @ 15:45 – High Street has now reopened in both directions, with Southern Vectis Route 4 and 9 buses able to return to their usual routes once again. 1 person has been taken to hospital for further assessment and treatment. The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has confirmed that the ambulance involved in the crash was responding on blue lights and sirens to an emergency call at the time. It is the second road traffic collision to involve an ambulance in the last month following a crash on St John’s Road, Ryde.
