CONTROLLED EXPLOSIONS TO MAKE WAY FOR ALDI

A series of controlled explosions will cause exclusion zones and road closures this weekend to make way for a new supermarket.

Between 00:00 on Friday to 08:00 on Saturday and again on Saturday Night into Sunday morning, explosive experts will blow up two pipebombs to clear ground next to BAE Systems in Cowes to allow the construction of Aldi, a German supermarket.

Ramora UK will detonate the bombs at around 6am on Saturdayand Sunday mornings.

The pipe bombs were originally laid to prevent German aircraft landing on the then airfield during World War II.

A 200 metre exclusion zone at the entrance to BAE Systems to Somerton roundabout and between Saunders Drive and the A3020 Newport Road will be in place.
