2 appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are attending a container fire on an industrial estate in Cowes this morning (Thursday).
Crews from Cowes and Newport have been mobilised to Somerton Industrial Estate where a shipping container is said to be alight.
The alarm was raised at just before 08:15.
UPDATE @ 08:44 – 1 hose reel jet and 2 breathing apparatus are being used to tackle the fire, according to fire control.
It has been confirmed that firefighters were mobilised to the same industrial estate at sunrise when reports were received of a vehicle fire. 1 pump from Cowes attended and extinguished the fire.
UPDATE @ 13:30 – Police have erected a cordon around the area to the side of Storeroom2020 amid potentially suspicious circumstances.
It is understood that the container fire was as a result of the earlier fire, which has destroyed a Ford Transit van.
Very strange! Spontaneous combustion of a car and then a container – must be a new phenomenon. Find the culprits and bang them up!
