The sound of screaming coming from the sea has prompted the mobilisation of 2 Coastguard teams and Bembridge RNLI lifeboat tonight (Saturday).
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to Appley Beach shortly before midnight following reports in to Solent Coastguard of screams being heard off the shore.
It’s understood a group of teenagers heard the screams and reported this to an adult, who in turn alerted search and rescue.
A search is currently being carried out by Coastguard Rescue Officers (CROs) between Puckpool and Ryde, with Bembridge RNLI’s inshore lifeboat sweeping along the coastline.
There has been no sign of anything untoward so far. One line of enquiry is the sound of a female fox that can be heard in amongst woodland in the vicinity by Island Echo and Coastguards alike.
Police are also on scene at Appley.
UPDATE – The search has now been called off and all resources have been stood down. Nothing has been found.
