New statistics from the 2021 census reveal that the overwhelming majority of Isle of Wight residents currently identify with their sex at birth.
Altogether, 111,974 people living on the Isle of Wight (93.63%) have declared themselves as being the same sex as they were registered at birth.
There are 91 trans men (natal women who live as men), 77 trans women (natal men who live as women) and 71 non-binary people (those that define themselves as neither men nor women) living on the Island. 42 people declared other gender identities than those listed above.
7,201 respondents chose not to answer the question.
There was also a question about sexuality in the 2021 census – the first time that a question of sexual orientation has been asked within the Census.
Almost 9 out of 10 Island residents (89.47%) claim to be heterosexual (having sexual attraction towards the opposite sex), 1.3% of Islanders are either gay or lesbian and 1.18% are bisexual (attracted to both sexes).
0.17% of those living on the Island are pansexual (having a sexual, romantic, or emotional attraction towards people regardless of their sex or gender identity), 0.08% are asexual (having a lack of sexual attraction to others) and 0.01% are queer (a gender identity or sexuality that does not fit society’s traditional ideas about gender or sexuality).
7.78% of Islanders didn’t answer the question.
The census questions were limited to residents aged 16 and over. Answering the questions regarding sexuality and gender identity on the census was optional.

Nothing wrong with who you love or whether your a man or woman trans or not.. but whats with all the other categories do people just make it up as they go along in 10 years time there will be a different phase its only just a belief system stemming from brainwashing social media.
Hey, are you mis-gendering me? I identify as a Dragon, and wish to be called Dragon William
Since when was a mythical animal a gender?
Rishi Sunak would say it’s not relevant.
And they spent our money on this? Why I ask!!? Accept the person themselves forget their gender or sexuality! Why they feel the need to pigeonhole
People is beyond me.
It’s a census? We always spend money doing them? What’s your issue?
It’s all mind boggling. Non Binary is neither a man or woman? 42 were none of the above?
Be happy in your own body but who makes up all these different genders??????
Almost 9 out of 10 Island residents (89.47%) claim to be heterosexual
So, why is there this disproportionate amount of time devoted to non heterosexuals by the police – painting rainbows on the cars, hanging around twitter for comment crime and why are we putting up with the disproportionate amount of time spent on the endless, ridiculous indoctrination of kids by teachers about non heterosexual matters.
the minorities should remember – they are just that, a minority and in a democracy, the majority rules. The only reason anything in society is permitted to be open and acceptable, is if the majority agree with it.
Wow, miss the point much?
no, wighter is spot on actually – why do we put up with so much time devoted to a miniscule minority, whilst the majority who are paying for the majority of the costs of this dross are being ignored and maligned.
Maybe you could share what time is devoted to the minority and what it costs you?
err not too difficult is it sam
over representation of minorities on tv, which doesn’t reflect the actual make up of society.
too much emphasis on gender or sexuality in jobs rather than actual ability
recently police forces have spent £66k on rainbow merchandise -woke waste
excess time spent on minority matters in schools and work rather than education and standards.
how does it affect me – i object to paying tax which is then spent promoting all this minority dross
i was dissapointed to not see George, Zippy or Bungle on any of the vehicles.
Because we are all minorities in some way or another.
Even you.
smiffy – I guess your unicorn, utopia is collapsing, now the realisation that 9 out of 10 are hetero and are not a minority, is the truth and always was- kind of puts things in perspective doesn’t it.
Where did I mention hetero / non-hetero?
Bet you’d be up in arms if there was active discrimination against incels, eh?
Such simple interpretation would be ochlocracy or in Tocquevile’s terms the abandonment of rationality where rules are made based on numbers and not rightness or excellence. We have moved away from such examples of democracy rather long time ago (even Ancient Rome did it quite well for its times!) and assessed it as a tyranny of majority hence democratic countries protect rights of minorities.
“Majority rule, minority rights” principle is quite… old. School must have mentioned it!
I guess in UK we might not have problems with majority ruling i.e it is unnecessary to go around shouting “heterosexuals should have right to vote!” so police doesn’t do it? But instead we recognise problems with minority rights, so we shout about it?
and look what happened to rome – a bad example. I note that you attempt to use language that tries to confer intelligence or elevated status in your reply – again, another example of someone trying to shut down reality to further an agenda.
majority rule is the correct way, as it ensures that the majority of citizens are generally happy with the society that they live in. You change any of this and see what hell breaks loose.
society is policed by consent – if the police fail to serve the requirements of the majority then they lose the consent of the majority and we return to self policing, which never ends well.
old school works and we, the majority say what goes – better understand that kidders
Why are we so bigoted in our census forms. What does it matter what colour/gender you are when we are pushing multi cultural differences? I can never figure out why they ask how much money you earn, what help is that who earn just about enough to survive and those who don’t nothing happens? Talk about waste of money, some info I agree is useful if used correctly for the betterment of all and that basically is the age catch to allow forward thinking for the future, but some only think about now and 6 months hence.
census == control
The only reason it is needed.
Why are we even asking about people’s sexuality? Why the need to tell people or broadcast it?
If you’re a man who fancies other men, fine, get on with it. Likewise if you’re a woman who fancies other women, great but, honestly, we don’t all need or want to know. It’s your own business, not anyone else’s, so keep it that way.
But, unfortunately, a small number of people want to constantly shout about it and seem to feel aggrieved if others don’t listen or aren’t interested.
The truth is that the vast majority of us simply don’t care who you are or what you get up to in your bedroom.
Very well said. The homosexual community would more likely be accepted in society if they weren’t constantly drawing attention to themselves as if they are something special.
But no homosexuals anymore??
I’m homosexual and have no issues with it but I don’t identify as ‘gay’ as I consider one to be nature and one to be lifestyle choice.
But from being persecuted to being accepted to being legislated for, homosexuals are now not recognised as now anyone fancying their own sex has to be ‘gay’.
Absolutely disgusting. The same as this CIS nonsense. Not all of us go for this woke bovine brown stuff. But no free press in UK.
Well said. Why do all these people constantly keep bleating on about who or what they are. Everything nowadays seems to have a ‘label’.
No need for labels. Just live your life as you see fit and what makes you happy. As long as no laws are broken.
Man or women that’s it when you go buy clothes it’s man or women sizes just part of the agenda
i feel sorry for school children. GCSE Biology must be a whole lot harder now
